BAKUCHIOL
Bakuchiol is often referred to as the plant-based alternative to retinol. It is a phyto-ingredient derived from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia, a plant long used in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine.
The respected British Journal of Dermatology published a study showing that bakuchiol stimulates collagen production, fights wrinkles, improves skin firmness, and suppresses melanin production — much like retinol. However, it is considerably safer and suitable even for very sensitive skin, as it rarely causes irritation.
Structurally, bakuchiol and retinol are different, but functionally they are very similar, as they affect the skin in the same way — activating the production of type I, III, and IV collagen while simultaneously inhibiting the enzyme that attacks and breaks down collagen. Bakuchiol is considered a functional analog of topical retinoids, and both compounds have been shown to induce similar gene expression in the skin, leading to a reduction in signs of photodamage.
Wrinkles
Both bakuchiol and retinol significantly reduced the surface area of fine facial wrinkles compared to baseline.
Pigmentation
Clinical evaluation showed improvement in hyperpigmentation in 59% of participants in the bakuchiol group, compared to 44% in the retinol group, at week 12. Both retinol and bakuchiol improved pigment intensity and lesion surface area by week 12.
The study demonstrates that bakuchiol is comparable to retinol in its ability to improve signs of photoaging, and is better tolerated than retinol.
